About Fraunhofer Venture
Fraunhofer Venture is the technology-transfer and company-builder affiliate of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, Europe's largest applied-research organisation, headquartered in Munich. The firm was founded in 2001 as a dedicated department within the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, converting publicly funded applied research from Fraunhofer institutes into commercial spin-offs. Fraunhofer Venture supported 68 new spin-off projects in 2024 (21 Fraunhofer-wide spin-offs formally established that year), managed alongside the affiliated FTTF venture vehicle.
Investment thesis
Fraunhofer Venture operates a spin-off creation and tech-transfer model rather than a traditional fund structure, supporting research-based startups from idea to exit via internal funding, seed capital facilitation, IP licensing and industry and VC networking, plus the AHEAD deep-tech accelerator. Sector focus spans industrial automation and robotics, photonics, biotechnology, battery and energy storage, digital security, 3D visualisation and cleantech. Geographic deployment is Germany core with broader Europe. The platform gives startups direct access to institute IP, labs and researchers across the Fraunhofer network.
Recent activity
Recent realised exits include surface technology and bionics (2024) and biotech (2024). Recent spin-offs include Logistikbude (logistics tech, 2024), Sunbloom Proteins (biotech, 2024) and Fusion Bionic (surface tech, 2024). The platform continues active spin-off creation across the Fraunhofer applied-research network. Detailed buyer names and multiple data available on Pro at €29/month.
