About YFM Equity Partners

YFM Equity Partners is one of the United Kingdom longest-established regional private equity managers. The firm is headquartered in Leeds and was founded in 1982. YFM operates a unique nationwide footprint with regional offices spanning Yorkshire, the North West, London, the East of England, the South West, the South East, the Midlands, Scotland and Northern Ireland, making it one of the most geographically distributed PE firms in the UK lower mid-market. YFM manages approximately GBP 750 million in assets (roughly €870 million equivalent as of December 2024). The firm operates two principal fund strategies across 28 distinct fund vehicles historically managed: the British Smaller Companies VCT family (publicly listed Venture Capital Trusts providing tax-efficient growth capital) and the Buyout Fund series (most recently YFM Buyout Fund III, which closed in 2023 at GBP 95.5 million ahead of target). The firm is FCA-authorised and structured as a UK limited company with employee ownership at the partner level. YFM has executed over 140 exits across its 40-plus year history, giving it one of the deepest realisation track records among UK regional PE managers.

Investment thesis

YFM Equity Partners strategy splits across two complementary mandates. The VCT vehicles provide growth and development capital to ambitious UK SMEs that meet HMRC qualifying-company criteria, typically scale-ups requiring GBP 2 to 8 million for organic growth, recruitment, product development or international expansion. The Buyout Fund III strategy targets management buyouts, buy-ins and shareholder transitions in profitable established UK SMEs with cheque sizes of GBP 5 to 15 million per platform. Sector coverage is deliberately diversified across the UK SME landscape: technology-enabled services and SaaS, healthcare services and health-tech, business services, consumer brands, e-commerce and digital agencies, fire safety and compliance, and specialist industrials. Geography is exclusively UK, leveraging regional sourcing through the firm nine-office network as a structural advantage in deal flow from owner-managed businesses outside London. The limited partner base spans retail VCT shareholders for the listed BSC vehicles, UK and European institutional investors, British Business Bank-backed mandates, family offices and corporate pension schemes. Value creation rests on hands-on board engagement, professionalisation of finance and governance, supporting management on commercial strategy and recruitment, and helping portfolio companies tap the YFM nationwide network for M&A and customer introductions.
