BPE is a Hamburg-based lower-mid-market private equity manager founded in 1998 as the private-equity arm of Berenberg Bank and fully independent since a management buy-out staged in 2000 and completed in 2009. It backs succession and carve-out situations in the German Mittelstand through MBO, MBI and owner buy-out structures, typically taking majority or significant minority stakes in companies with revenues of roughly EUR 10-100 million. Across four closed-end funds (BPE 1 to BPE 4, the latter a EUR 135 million 2020 vintage) the firm has completed around 39 direct investments, concentrated in industrial manufacturing, measurement and control technology, food and business software.
