About OBO Werke GmbH
OBO-Werke GmbH is a Stadthagen, Germany based specialty materials manufacturer that produces polyurethane and epoxy resin products, sold as boards, blocks, pastes and liquids, for model construction, toolmaking and mould making. Its core line is the obomodulan range of rigid polyurethane boards, which the company has manufactured since the 1980s across a density spectrum of roughly 80 to 1,600 kilograms per cubic metre, serving technologically demanding niche markets in industries such as automotive and aerospace. The business supplies model, tool and mould makers with materials used to build master models, prototypes and production tooling. Positioned as a focused polyurethane and epoxy specialist rather than a broad-line chemicals group, OBO competes on formulation depth and application know-how in the European tooling materials segment.
Ownership journey
OBO-Werke traces its origins to Otto Bosse, a wood processing business founded in 1869, with the present OBO-Werke GmbH emerging in 1994 as the company shifted from sawmilling toward tooling materials. In 2003 the listed evergreen holding company MBB SE, then MBB Industries AG, acquired OBO from family ownership and held it as a wholly owned subsidiary. MBB retained the business for close to two decades as a long-term industrial holding rather than a time-limited fund investment. MBB exited its majority stake in 2022 via a secondary transaction.
Under PE ownership
After acquiring OBO from its founding family, MBB concentrated the business on rigid polyurethane foam boards and the obomodulan product family, sharpening the portfolio toward higher value tooling applications. In 2014 OBO took over the European tooling board and tooling paste business of Huntsman Advanced Materials, absorbing the Renshape board and Renpaste paste lines and becoming the master distributor of Huntsman's tooling liquids across nearly all European markets, a step that broadened its product range and consolidated its position as a single European face in tooling materials. Company statements around that transaction indicated OBO had roughly doubled sales to about EUR 12 million since 2009, with the Huntsman deal expected to lift revenue further. Under MBB's ownership the company thus moved from a niche board maker toward a fuller supplier of polyurethane and epoxy tooling materials for European model, tool and mould makers.
