About Pamfood
Pamfood is a Savona-based Italian food producer specialising in Ligurian food specialities, principally pesto and ready-to-use sauces, supplied largely to the Italian large-scale grocery retail channel. Founded and run for years as a family business by the Maggiali family, it built its positioning on regional Ligurian recipes sold both under private label and its own branding to national retailers. In 2011, the year before its private-equity transaction, Pamfood generated close to EUR 7 million in revenue, all realised within Italy. It was subsequently integrated with a second food producer, Essedue Alimentare, a maker of fresh potato gnocchi, into a single Italian food platform.
Ownership journey
Pamfood was owned by the Maggiali family and based in Savona, in the Liguria region of north-west Italy. In spring 2012, Assietta Private Equity, an independent Milan-based manager, acquired control of the company through its Fondo Dimensione Impresa, a closed-end fund focused on Italian small and medium-sized enterprises. The fund took 90 percent of the equity from the Maggiali family, who retained 7.3 percent alongside the management team. Assietta paired the deal with the parallel acquisition of Essedue Alimentare, producer of fresh potato gnocchi under the Patamore brand, assembling the two businesses into a combined food group. Fondo Dimensione Impresa held the investment for roughly three years and exited in 2015 via a secondary transaction.
Under PE ownership
Under Assietta ownership, Pamfood was merged with Essedue Alimentare to form Buona Compagnia Gourmet, a group producing potato gnocchi and ready-to-eat sauces across production sites in Savona and Quinto di Treviso. The enlarged platform commercialised its range through private label as well as the Patamore, Antica Ricetta and Tuo Chef brands, broadening its reach with Italian retailers. Revenue of the combined group climbed to approximately EUR 14 million by the 2014 financial year, up markedly from the roughly EUR 7 million Pamfood recorded on a standalone basis in 2011. Having built and scaled this integrated Italian food business, Fondo Dimensione Impresa exited the group in 2015 via a secondary transaction.
