About MDT technologies

MDT Technologies is a German manufacturer of smart building automation components built on the KNX standard, headquartered in Engelskirchen, where it designs and produces its range in-house. Its portfolio spans wired and wireless KNX devices, actuators, high-end design sensors and cloud-enabled management solutions that control lighting, heating, ventilation and shading in residential and commercial buildings. The company positions itself as a "Made in Germany" specialist, manufacturing more than 95 percent of its products at its own site and marketing an offering of roughly 600 devices. It employs approximately 250 people and sells through electrical wholesalers, with a commercial footprint that now extends across Europe and into India and the Middle East.

Ownership journey

MDT was founded in 1984 in Engelskirchen and entered the KNX building automation market in 2009, growing into one of Europe's leading specialists in the standard. IK Partners acquired a majority stake in March 2020 through its IK VIII Mid Cap fund, backing a founder-led business alongside its retained management. In 2021 Capza supported the company's development with private debt financing provided through its CAPZA 6 Private Debt vehicle. In 2026 IK VIII exited its investment via a secondary transaction after six years of ownership. Bregal Unternehmerkapital, investing through its Fund IV, is the current owner from 2026.

Under PE ownership

Under IK Partners' ownership from 2020 the company more than doubled its output and broadened its catalogue to around 600 KNX products, while building a new, highly automated headquarters and manufacturing facility in Engelskirchen. It professionalised from a founder-led structure into a mature organisation with a full management team and dedicated international sales and support capabilities. Growth was reinforced by the acquisitions of Tense, Tapko and Apricum, which extended its technology and product reach. The period also brought a sustainability programme, including science-based emissions targets and sourcing around 95 percent of electricity from renewable sources, alongside an EU Taxonomy assessment. This combination of expanded capacity, international reach and product depth is the platform on which the 2026 change of ownership was based.
