About Ethypharm

Ethypharm is a France-based specialty pharmaceutical company focused on the central nervous system and hospital injectables, with leading positions in severe pain management and the treatment of addiction. Its central-nervous-system franchise centres on opioid substitution and overdose reversal, producing widely prescribed molecules such as methadone, buprenorphine and naloxone, while its critical-care range supplies injectable medicines used in intensive care and emergency medicine, including branded products such as Recivit and nefopam. Headquartered in Saint-Cloud, the group operates across France, Germany, Spain, the United Kingdom, Canada, the United States and China, combining manufacturing sites with an in-house innovation centre. At the time of its 2016 change of ownership the company employed around 950 people, mostly in France, and generated more than EUR 200 million in sales, positioning it as a mid-size international specialty player rather than a broad-line generic manufacturer.

Ownership journey

Ethypharm was founded in 1977 and built its business in France around controlled-release and hard-to-formulate medicines for the central nervous system. In 2007 Astorg acquired control of the company through its Astorg IV fund, backing the founding shareholder and management as the group expanded its pain and addiction franchises. Astorg exited in 2016 via a secondary transaction, having held the asset for close to a decade. That same year PAI Partners invested in Ethypharm through PAI Europe VI, its buyout fund, alongside co-investor Omnes Capital and the management team, and both sponsors remain active shareholders with no further exit or secondary transaction recorded.

Under PE ownership

The 2016 investment was framed around consolidating Ethypharm's positions in emergency care, pain and addiction and accelerating its international expansion. In January 2017, shortly after the change of ownership, Ethypharm acquired Martindale Pharma in the United Kingdom, a deal that broadened the group's geographic reach and combined complementary manufacturing capabilities across solid dose, injectables and oral liquids. The enlarged group was reported to have combined revenues of more than EUR 300 million, up from over EUR 200 million before the acquisition, giving it a stronger platform in specialty and critical-care medicines. Under the current ownership the company has continued to describe itself as an agile mid-size international specialty pharmaceutical business pursuing further partnerships and business development.
