Lakestar is a pan-European deep-tech venture capital firm with more than €2 billion of assets under management across 4 early-stage and 2 growth funds as of December 2024, headquartered in Zurich with offices in London, Berlin and New York. The firm was founded in 2012 by Klaus Hommels and pivoted in October 2025 away from generalist funds toward a portfolio-focused approach plus seeding spin-out funds, closing a $265 million continuation vehicle in September 2025. Lakestar remains a partner-owned independent VC.

Investment thesis

Lakestar deploys capital through approximately six funds (Early I-IV and Growth I-II) plus the 2025 continuation vehicle, targeting multi-stage venture investments from Seed through Growth across European digital sovereignty themes. Sector focus spans deep tech, fintech, healthcare, digitalisation, defense tech and AI, with anchor positions in Helsing (defense AI), Isar Aerospace (space) and Auterion (autonomous systems). Geographic deployment is pan-European with selective US footprint, supported by long-term founder partnership in selective deep-tech sectors and a European digital sovereignty thesis.

Recent activity

Recent realised exits include procurement tech (2025) with travel tech exits ongoing from earlier vintages. Recent investments include Matta (AI and manufacturing, December 2025 $14 million seed) plus follow-ons in Neko Health and Helsing portfolio companies.
