Exit

Exit · The process by which a PE fund sells or disposes of a portfolio company investment. Common exit routes include trade sales, secondary buyouts, and IPOs.

Example

A PE fund sells its 60% stake in a software business to a strategic acquirer for €450M, six years after the original investment. The fund records the sale as an exit and distributes the proceeds (net of carry) to LPs.
