About Syntax

Syntax is a Canadian technology services provider that implements and manages mission-critical enterprise applications, chiefly ERP systems from SAP, Oracle and JD Edwards, delivered across private, public and hybrid cloud environments. Positioned as a managed cloud provider for mid-market and large enterprises, the firm bundles ERP implementation, application management, hosting, security and analytics for roughly 800 to 900 corporate customers worldwide. At the time of its recent ownership event it generated close to US$500 million in revenue, of which about 85 percent was recurring, and it operated from more than 20 offices across the Americas, Europe, Africa and Asia. Following a run of acquisitions its workforce has grown to roughly 2,600 to 2,800 professionals, and it partners closely with SAP, Oracle, AWS, Microsoft and IBM.

Ownership journey

Syntax was founded in 1972 and is headquartered in Montreal, Quebec, building over five decades into a global ERP and managed cloud specialist. Ardian, investing through its Co-Investment Fund V, backed the business from 2021 as part of a recapitalization that valued Syntax at roughly US$800 million and set aside about US$300 million to fund continued growth. The transaction was structured through a continuation vehicle, allowing existing backers to reinvest alongside new capital while the company pursued its expansion plan. Ardian remains an active investor in Syntax, and no exit or secondary transaction involving its stake has been recorded.

Under PE ownership

The 2021 capital was explicitly earmarked to fund Syntax's continued growth, and the company used the period to scale through acquisitions and to deepen its ERP consulting bench. In November 2023 it completed the acquisition of Beyond Technologies, a SAP-focused consultancy founded in 2005 with more than 400 professionals across Canada, the United States, France, Morocco and South Africa, lifting combined headcount past 2,800 and adding sector expertise in manufacturing, construction, natural resources, retail and life sciences. Further bolt-on activity followed in 2024, extending the firm's footprint to more than 20 offices worldwide and reinforcing its multi-platform SAP and Oracle capabilities. Across the holding period Syntax has broadened from a hosting and infrastructure base toward a fuller cloud, security, data and IoT services portfolio serving 900-plus enterprise clients.
