About Moixa

Moixa is a London-based clean-energy technology company that designs residential battery storage systems and the GridShare software platform used to optimise and aggregate fleets of home batteries and electric-vehicle chargers into virtual power plants. Its hardware line evolved from early USBCell rechargeable cells and the Maslow home storage unit into the Moixa Smart Battery, marketed in capacities such as 4.8kWh for pairing with residential solar. The differentiator is GridShare, an AI-driven layer that forecasts household demand, schedules charging and discharging, and lets aggregated batteries deliver flexibility and grid services to network operators. According to company and investor disclosures, GridShare was deployed at scale across roughly 35,000 homes representing about 330MWh of batteries through its distribution partner in Japan, alongside programmes with Honda on smart EV charging in Europe and with UK Power Networks on distribution-network flexibility.

Ownership journey

Moixa was founded in London in 2004 by Simon Daniel and Chris Wright, initially around portable USB-rechargeable batteries before pivoting to home energy storage and grid software. First Imagine! Ventures backed the company as an early investor from 2017, supporting Moixa as it built out GridShare and expanded internationally, and the company grew to around 70 employees. First Imagine! Ventures invested as one of several venture backers rather than as a controlling owner, alongside strategic and corporate investors drawn to the battery-aggregation model. In 2022 First Imagine! Ventures exited its position via a trade sale, concluding its involvement with the business.

Under PE ownership

During the investment period Moixa shifted its centre of gravity from selling battery hardware toward licensing GridShare as a software platform for managing distributed energy at scale. The company moved from managing thousands of batteries to a fleet of roughly 35,000 homes and about 330MWh of storage through its Japan deployment, described at the time as one of the largest managed clusters of home batteries anywhere. It layered on commercial programmes including smart EV charging with Honda, depot charging trials, and a partnership with UK Power Networks to supply flexibility to distribution networks. Recognition followed the operational scale-up, including selection for the Global Cleantech 100, and by 2022 GridShare had become the primary asset carried into the trade sale that ended First Imagine! Ventures' holding.
