About legalstart
Legalstart is a Paris-based online legal services platform that helps entrepreneurs and small businesses in France handle their legal, administrative and accounting procedures online, spanning company formation and statutory filings, bookkeeping, trademark registration and debt recovery. It positions itself as a low-cost, disintermediated alternative to traditional lawyers and accountants, and has extended its offering into administrative-compliance tools and payment accounts for professionals. Since its commercial launch in 2014 the platform has served more than 100,000 entrepreneurs, and by the group's own account it covers a leading share of France's disintermediated business-creation segment. The company has described itself as profitable since inception, with a workforce that grew from roughly 60 people to around 150.
Ownership journey
Legalstart was founded in Paris in 2012 by Pierre Aidan, Timothee Rambaud and Stephane Le Viet, and launched commercially in 2014. ISAI first backed the company in 2019 with a minority investment of more than EUR 15 million to accelerate its expansion, and in 2021 supported a buyout alongside participating management. The holding was carried by ISAI Expansion III, the firm's growth and buyout fund that closed at its EUR 300 million hard cap in 2025, within a relationship ISAI itself described as seven years of shareholder partnership. ISAI exited in 2026 via a trade sale.
Under PE ownership
The 2019 capital was earmarked for organic growth and for widening Legalstart's network of partner lawyers, notaries and accountants, and under ISAI's ownership the platform broadened well beyond its original document and company-formation core. It launched an online accounting service, added its Zen administrative-compliance offering in 2023, rolled out payment accounts for professionals in 2024, and struck a professional-insurance partnership the same year. Commercially the group scaled toward covering a leading share of French company formations and grew headcount to around 150 employees. ISAI exited in 2026 via a trade sale, ending a holding period during which Legalstart consolidated its position as one of the country's largest online legal-services providers.
