About Kristinestad Energy Cluster
The Kristinestad Energy Cluster is a Finnish renewable-energy complex in the Ostrobothnia region, near the coastal town of Kristinestad (Kristiinankaupunki), that combines onshore wind generation with planned solar capacity and a green hydrogen and synthetic-methane plant. It is designed to pair up to roughly 500 MW of wind and 100 MW of photovoltaics with a 200 MW electrolyzer, converting renewable power into green hydrogen that is further processed into sustainable liquefied synthetic methane for heavy-transport fuel. Its anchor generating assets include the Lappfjard wind farm, commissioned at 192 MW across 31 turbines with scope to reach up to 250 MW, and the neighbouring Sandbacka project of more than 90 MW across 14 turbines producing about 250 GWh a year. The power-to-X element is developed through the Koppo Energia joint venture, positioning the cluster among the larger integrated wind-to-hydrogen schemes in the Nordic onshore market.
Ownership journey
The cluster was assembled by the German asset manager Prime Capital AG through its Prime Green Energy Infrastructure Fund, which has invested in Finnish onshore wind since the mid-2010s. In 2022 the fund publicly announced the Kristinestad Energy Cluster and established a joint venture with the developer CPC Finland to build and operate the planned green hydrogen and e-methane facility, alongside a wider portfolio of Finnish and Swedish wind projects. In October 2022 the fund signed and closed its acquisition of the ready-to-build Sandbacka wind farm, described as the tenth and final investment of the vehicle and explicitly earmarked for integration into the cluster. The Prime Green Energy Infrastructure Fund remains the active owner of the Finnish onshore wind portfolio, and no exit or secondary transaction has been recorded.
Under PE ownership
Since the 2022 commitments, the cluster has moved steadily from development into construction and operation. The Lappfjard wind farm was brought online in the first quarter of 2023, following a build-out backed by roughly EUR 200 million of investment, while the Sandbacka wind farm entered construction from the second quarter of 2023 with completion targeted for the end of 2024. On the power-to-X side, ANDRITZ was engaged in 2023 to carry out front-end engineering design for the 200 MW hydrogen plant, with the engineering, procurement and construction order anticipated in early 2024 and commissioning targeted for 2025. Through these and parallel Nordic deals the fund reported lifting Prime Capital's realised infrastructure capacity above 2,000 MW, making it one of the larger investors in Scandinavian onshore wind.
