About Gradus
Gradus is a Macclesfield-based building products manufacturer that supplies contract interior solutions to the commercial construction and refurbishment markets. Its range spans floorcoverings and contract carpet, barrier matting, stair edgings and floor trims, wall protection systems, LED lighting and associated accessories, sold as integrated packages backed by an in-house technical design service. The company serves eight end-market sectors, including healthcare, education, commercial offices, leisure and hospitality, and retail, and pairs its UK manufacturing base with international sales reaching the Far East and Australasia. At the time of its private-equity ownership the business employed more than 300 people and carried a turnover of around GBP 40 million, positioning it as an established specialist in flooring accessories and wall protection rather than a volume commodity supplier.
Ownership journey
Gradus was founded in 1966 and built its position over subsequent decades as a UK specialist in flooring accessories and contract interior products. In September 2014 Endless backed a management buyout of the company through its Endless Fund IV vehicle, a transaction the firm funded without third-party debt. Endless held the business for a little over a year, supporting the incumbent management team through a period of commercial expansion. The sponsor exited in 2015 via a trade sale to a strategic purchaser, and no further Endless involvement has been recorded since.
Under PE ownership
The 2014 buyout was structured to give management the backing to pursue growth while Endless supported the operating agenda rather than loading the balance sheet with acquisition debt. Under the investment the company delivered sales growth and improved profitability, developing new targets and markets and raising its visibility across UK and international trade channels. That trajectory drew an unsolicited approach from a strategic acquirer, which led to the trade sale roughly fourteen months after the original transaction. The holding period stands as a compact operational growth story rather than a financially engineered one.
