About Fiber Elements
Fiber Elements is a Leoben-based construction-materials company that develops and manufactures three-dimensional, load-path-oriented reinforcement structures made from continuous basalt fibers, positioned as a non-corrosive, recyclable alternative to conventional steel reinforcement in concrete. Its process pairs component design through finite element analysis with AI-driven optimisation of fiber layouts, executed by two automated production methods, Tailored Fiber Placement (technical embroidery for 2D and 3D fiber placement) and robotic wet winding. The company states its basalt composites are roughly three times stronger than steel while about two-thirds lighter, and can cut the cumulative CO2 emissions of the reinforced concrete by up to 70 percent. It sits at the intersection of advanced materials and construction decarbonisation, operating from the ZAT start-up centre at Montanuniversitaet Leoben with a team of around ten and an early customer base of five clients as of mid-2025.
Ownership journey
Fiber Elements was founded in 2023 in Leoben, Austria by Wolfgang Fiel, an architect and researcher, to industrialise basalt-fiber reinforcement for the building sector. In July 2025 the company raised EUR 2.6 million in a seed round led by LEA Partners, investing through its LEA Venturepartner venture strategy. LEA Partners remains an active venture backer and Fiber Elements is still listed as a current portfolio company; no exit or secondary transaction has been recorded. As a minority venture investment, the round funds growth rather than a change of control, with the founding team continuing to run the business.
Under PE ownership
The 2025 seed capital was earmarked for industrial scaling, automation of the digital production workflow and team expansion, with the company targeting a doubling of headcount from about ten to twenty employees by the end of the year. Since the investment Fiber Elements has pushed toward full automation of its FEA-to-manufacturing pipeline, layering AI-driven optimisation onto its Tailored Fiber Placement and robotic winding lines. It has also advanced its intellectual property position, holding one granted patent with several further applications filed in 2025, and set out plans for on-site nano-factories intended to reduce transport and its associated emissions. Commercial traction remained early-stage, with five customers served and a research network spanning the universities in Leoben and Vienna.
