About Faversham House
Faversham House is an independent United Kingdom B2B media group, headquartered in East Grinstead, West Sussex, that runs a portfolio of exhibitions, conferences, digital platforms and specialist publications. It concentrates on three markets, utilities, sustainability and visual communications, serving each with trade titles, awards programmes and live events rather than a single flagship product. Its best known asset has been edie, long positioned as one of Europe's largest online resources for environmental and sustainability professionals. Across the group it has published around 15 B2B magazines and organised roughly 22 exhibitions and conferences in the United Kingdom and Ireland, combining print, online and face to face channels for niche industrial audiences.
Ownership journey
Faversham House traces its origins to 1961 as a family owned publisher, and by 2010 some family shareholders wanted to exit while others intended to carry the business forward. That year Mobeus Equity Partners, investing through its Mobeus VCTs, backed an approximately GBP 4 million management buyout, contributing around GBP 2 million of combined debt and equity alongside vendor financing and significant management rollover. At the time of the deal the business employed about 100 people and generated annual revenue of roughly GBP 10 million. Mobeus placed an operating partner as investing chairman and installed a new finance director to support the management team. Mobeus exited in 2013 via a management buyout, after which no further ownership legs are recorded on this sheet.
Under PE ownership
The buyout capital and board support underwrote a deliberate shift away from advertising funded, print led titles toward digital information, subscriptions, memberships and live events. Under chief executive Amanda Barnes, who led the buyout, the group rebuilt its revenue mix so that events came to represent the majority of turnover, in the region of 60 to 65 percent, with recurring memberships adding a further share. It deepened its position in utilities, sustainability and visual communications, expanding exhibitions and conferences alongside its established environmental brand edie. The transformation moved Faversham House from a traditional family publisher into a digital and events focused media business by the time of the sponsor's exit.
