About Broadleaf Group
Broadleaf Group is a London-based consumer media and ecommerce group built around the former Dennis Publishing business, spanning subscription magazine and digital titles alongside an automotive content and marketplace operation. Its media portfolio ran to 35 print and digital titles across 10 verticals, anchored by the flagship current-affairs brand The Week, described as the second largest current-affairs title in both the UK and US markets. The automotive arm, Autovia, combined established motoring media assets with the used-car ecommerce platform BuyaCar. According to the sponsor's disclosures, the wider business reached 1.1 million subscribers and more than 27 million unique monthly visitors across its titles and websites. The group operated across the UK and US, positioned in the subscription-led media and digital marketplace segment rather than advertising-dependent print.
Ownership journey
The group's media assets trace back to Dennis Publishing, founded in London by Felix Dennis in 1973 and grown over decades into one of Britain's best-known independent magazine houses. In October 2018 Exponent Private Equity acquired the business from the Felix Dennis Estate, investing through Exponent Private Equity Partners IV and partnering with the incumbent management team led by chief executive James Tye. The assets were held within a group structure that became Broadleaf Group, covering both the Dennis subscription media titles and the Autovia automotive business. In October 2021 Exponent exited the core subscription media operation via a trade sale, retaining the automotive activities within Broadleaf. The remaining Autovia business, including the BuyaCar platform, was subsequently divested in February 2024 via a further trade sale, completing the sponsor's realisation of the group.
Under PE ownership
Under Exponent's ownership the business was repositioned around recurring subscription revenue, and the sponsor describes it as having grown into a category-defining subscription media platform reaching 1.1 million subscribers. The Week was scaled internationally, reinforcing its standing across both the UK and US current-affairs markets, while the wider stable built to more than 27 million unique monthly visitors. In parallel the automotive assets were consolidated into Autovia, pairing motoring titles with the BuyaCar used-car ecommerce platform to create an integrated content-and-marketplace business. That structure allowed the media and automotive halves to be separated and sold to distinct strategic owners, the subscription titles in 2021 and Autovia in early 2024. The Autovia divestment was completed for a reported 14.3 million pounds, with the automotive brands reaching over 15 million car owners, buyers and enthusiasts each month at the point of sale.
