About blau Mobilfunk GmbH

blau Mobilfunk is a Hamburg-based mobile virtual network operator that pioneered the independent mobile discount model in Germany, selling low-cost prepaid and no-frills voice and data plans without operating its own radio network. Trading chiefly under the blau.de brand for domestic service and blauworld for low-cost international and diaspora calling, the company rode on E-Plus infrastructure to offer some of the cheapest per-minute tariffs in the market. It positioned itself as Germany's first independent mobile discounter, targeting price-sensitive consumers at a time when the segment was dominated by the network operators themselves. By 2007 the business had grown to roughly 600,000 customers, establishing it as one of the leading challengers in the German prepaid discount market.

Ownership journey

blau Mobilfunk was founded in Hamburg in the summer of 2005 by Martin Ostermayer, Thorsten Rehling and Dirk Freise, who conceived it as the first independent mobile phone discounter in Germany. The venture was backed at inception by Neuhaus Partners, the Hamburg venture capital firm then still trading as Dr. Neuhaus Techno Nord, which provided the start-up capital through its Dr. Neuhaus Techno Nord Fund II in 2005. Under this backing the company scaled rapidly and, in late 2006, absorbed the competing debitel light business, moving blau to number two in the German mobile discount market. In 2008 Neuhaus Partners exited the investment via a trade sale, and blau Mobilfunk is listed among the firm's former successful holdings. Given the age of the transaction, some deal specifics beyond the founding backing and the 2008 exit remain lightly documented.

Under PE ownership

The 2005 start-up capital allowed a small founding team to launch and quickly commercialise the independent discounter model, undercutting incumbent tariffs on a virtual network rather than building costly infrastructure. During the backing period the customer base expanded to around 600,000 by 2007, and the acquisition of debitel light in late 2006 consolidated the young discount segment and lifted blau to the number two position by market share. The blau.de and blauworld brands were built out to serve, respectively, domestic price-sensitive users and international callers, broadening the addressable audience. That operational momentum culminated in the 2008 trade sale, after which the brand continued to grow, reporting revenue of about EUR 208.8 million and 108 employees by 2011, though those later figures fall outside the original investment horizon.
