About Attalon
Attalon is a US aerospace and defense technology company that engineers precision optics, directed-energy and advanced laser systems, and specialty coatings for mission-critical platforms across air, space and ground domains. Its product lines span lightweight aspheric and free-form optics for intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance and targeting, beam-combined and pulsed laser subsystems that scale to hundreds of kilowatts, and patterned thermal coatings rated for extreme temperatures, supporting ISR, missile guidance, space and survivability applications. The company describes itself as vertically integrated and domestically sourced, with production based entirely in the United States. Per its own disclosures, Attalon employs more than 500 people across 11 US sites, draws on roughly a century of telescope and optics manufacturing heritage, and has shipped over 1,000 laser amplifiers.
Ownership journey
Attalon was established in January 2026 from the carve-out of the aerospace and defense business of Coherent Corp., a unit whose optics lineage traces back around 100 years. In January 2026 Advent International acquired the division in a transaction valued at about USD 400 million and relaunched it as a standalone company under the Attalon brand, investing through its Advent Global Private Equity X fund. Advent International remains the active owner and Attalon is currently held in its portfolio; no exit or secondary transaction has been recorded. At launch the company appointed John Bergeron, a 35-year aerospace and defense veteran, as President and Chief Executive Officer, with Mike Kahn serving as Chairman of the Board.
Under PE ownership
The Advent-backed carve-out converted a corporate business unit into an independent, purpose-built defense platform, giving Attalon its own brand, leadership team and capital structure focused on next-generation warfare technologies. Under the new ownership the company organized around three strategic segments, precision optics, directed energy and advanced lasers, and precision coatings, and installed a fresh executive team spanning finance, growth and operations under CEO John Bergeron. Attalon debuted its brand and capabilities at Photonics West in San Francisco in January 2026 and has continued to win federal work, including a USD 17.1 million Office of Naval Research award tied to the Navy SONGBOW program in mid-2026. As the investment closed only in early 2026, the operating record under Advent is still short, and the early emphasis has been on standing up the independent company and accelerating investment in directed-energy and space optics.
