About Andasol 1&2
Andasol 1&2 are two adjacent concentrated-solar-power plants on the Guadix plateau near Granada in Andalusia, Spain, each rated at 50 MW for roughly 100 MW of combined capacity. The plants use parabolic-trough technology to concentrate sunlight, and were among the first commercial trough facilities in Europe to pair generation with large-scale molten-salt thermal storage, holding about 7.5 hours of full-load output so electricity can be dispatched into the evening and through cloud cover. Sited at around 1,100 metres of elevation to capture exceptionally high direct normal irradiation, the two units together produce on the order of 300 GWh a year. The assets sit within Spain's regulated renewable-energy framework, selling firm, storage-backed solar power that helped establish the country as an early hub for commercial solar-thermal generation.
Ownership journey
Andasol 1 and Andasol 2 were developed by Solar Millennium together with the Spanish construction group Cobra and commissioned in 2008 and 2009 respectively, making them pioneering commercial parabolic-trough plants on the continent. In 2011 Antin Infrastructure Partners invested through its Fund I, taking a stake in the two operating plants as part of the firm's early energy and environment portfolio. Antin held the position through the build-out of Spain's solar-thermal sector and the subsequent regulatory tariff changes affecting the industry. In 2017 Antin exited the investment via a trade sale, transferring its interest in Andasol 1&2 to a new owner.
Under PE ownership
Under Antin's ownership the plants operated as a mature, cash-generative infrastructure asset, dispatching storage-backed solar power into the Spanish grid through years of shifting energy policy. During the hold the assets weathered Spain's retroactive cuts to renewable-energy tariffs, a change that reshaped the economics of the country's solar-thermal fleet and prompted international arbitration by investors in the sector. Across their operating life the Andasol plants delivered more than two terawatt-hours cumulatively to the grid, equivalent to the annual consumption of several hundred thousand Spanish households, demonstrating the reliability of trough-plus-storage generation. By the time of the 2017 exit the plants had established a multi-year record as one of Europe's flagship commercial concentrated-solar installations.
