About 1KOMMA5

1KOMMA5 (styled 1Komma5) is a Hamburg-based residential energy company that installs and operates integrated home systems combining rooftop solar, battery storage, heat pumps and electric-vehicle charging for private households. At its core sits Heartbeat, an AI energy-management platform that links these devices into what the company describes as Europe's largest virtual power plant for residential customers, managing more than 40,000 connected energy systems and optimising when households draw, store and sell power. The group sells hardware and installation through a network of local craft businesses and increasingly monetises Heartbeat through flat software fees rather than electricity margins. According to company disclosures, 1KOMMA5 operates roughly 80 locations across seven markets, including showrooms from Helsinki and Copenhagen to Berlin and Adelaide, and employs around 2,500 people.

Ownership journey

1KOMMA5 was founded in 2021 in Hamburg by former Tesla manager Philipp Schroeder together with co-founders Micha Grueber and Jannik Schall, with the aim of building a one-stop platform for carbon-neutral homes. In December 2021 Porsche Ventures, the venture arm of the sports-car maker, took a shareholding as one of the company's early institutional backers. The following year, as part of a large growth financing in 2022, the family-owned industrial group Franz Haniel & Cie came on board, alongside the Muenster-based venture investor eCAPITAL, which invested through its eCAPITAL V fund. Porsche Ventures, Franz Haniel & Cie and eCAPITAL all remain active shareholders; no exit or secondary transaction has been recorded.

Under PE ownership

The 2021 and 2022 equity rounds funded an aggressive buy-and-build and technology strategy, with capital directed toward acquisitions of local installation firms, digitalisation and the development of the Heartbeat energy platform. Since the investment 1KOMMA5 has scaled revenue sharply, reporting total sales of around 520 million euros in 2024 against roughly 450 million euros the prior year, while remaining debt-free according to company statements. It expanded Heartbeat to manage more than 40,000 connected systems and to control third-party heat pumps, storage units and wall boxes, and carved the software activity into a separate Heartbeat subsidiary to pursue a flat-fee model. The company has committed a further 100 million euros over three years to grow the software business and has set a long-term revenue ambition of 10 billion euros by 2030.
